We’re sharing Central Ohio Technical College President John M. Berry’s recent message about the Italian Immersion Exchange Program.
"This past summer, the college hosted its annual Italian Immersion Exchange Program, welcoming students from Reggello, Italy. Every other year, students from Reggello visit Newark to experience American culture firsthand through educational activities, cultural experiences, and visits to notable destinations throughout Ohio.
The Italian Guest Exchange Program began on July 22, when the students arrived in Ohio and were welcomed by their host families. These host families are the heart of the program and include COTC faculty, staff, and community members who generously open their homes and share their daily lives and traditions with the visiting students throughout their stay.
The visit showcased the wide variety of cultural, historical, and recreational experiences Ohio has to offer. Locally, students visited Trinity AME Church, The Dawes Arboretum, and the Licking County Courthouse, gaining insight into the region's history and community. The group also traveled throughout the state, exploring attractions such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Kings Island in Mason, and Amish Country, including a visit to The Farm at Walnut Creek.
The final major excursion focused on Ohio's history and culture. Students toured the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, enjoyed lunch at North Market, and concluded the day with a performance by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at Columbus Commons, complete with a fireworks display.
The program concluded with the president’s farewell picnic. During the event, students reflected on their experiences, shared their favorite memories from the trip, and expressed their appreciation to their host families for their hospitality and friendship. On August 2, the group departed Ohio carrying home souvenirs, lasting memories, and a deeper understanding of American culture.
The Italian Immersion Program was established through the vision and generosity of Louella H. Reese and the Gilbert Reese Family Foundation and continues today because of their ongoing support. Gifts from the Foundation make it possible for students from Reggello to experience life in Ohio and develop a greater appreciation for different cultures, helping them understand the importance and value of living in an increasingly interconnected global society."
