Cost- Share Partnership

The Value of the Cost-Share Partnership of Central Ohio Technical College and The Ohio State University at Newark

The Newark Campus Development Fund was established in 1983 as a way for community members to support Central Ohio Technical College and The Ohio State University at Newark by making a philanthropic gift to one entity. This efficient philanthropic strategy exemplifies the unique cost-share partnership found at the Newark campus.

Historically, more than 95% of donations to capital campaigns are typically made to NCDF, realizing the collaborative cost-share advantage and philanthropic partnership between NCDF and the Newark campus. Your charitable gifts to the Newark Campus Development Fund directly support scholarships, grants, and capital expenditures to both schools.

In addition to sharing a 175-acre campus, COTC and Ohio State Newark have a strong partnership whereby they share all buildings and general-purpose classrooms, approximately 80 staff, operating expenses, and a number of capital equipment investments. While the governance, mission, curriculum and faculty of each institution remain autonomous, an annual cost-sharing agreement designates shared costs for select personnel, facilities, operating expenditures and capital equipment investments.

This partnership is a competitive advantage to both Ohio State Newark and COTC. It not only produces operational efficiencies but is also viewed favorably by community members and governing bodies, resulting in stronger community support.

  • The cost-share partnership saves both institutions an estimated $2 million per year in operating and financial efficiency as well as space utilization.
  • Both schools can leverage state capital appropriations together and share the cost of campus maintenance and improvements, which allows for more beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities and campus grounds.
  • COTC and Ohio State Newark are not in competition with one another. Together, they offer a variety of entrée points to meet the educational needs of students.

Since COTC joined Ohio State on the Newark campus in 1971, there has been an expectation from the campus’s founding fathers and supporters that both schools work together to operate as efficiently as possible. That expectation continues today.
